Nagoya University of Foreign Studies
Nagoya UniversityNagoya University

In order to meet the diverse study objectives of non-degree international students, the Japanese Language Institute of Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS) offers the following two courses of study:

The Contemporary Japan Program in Nagoya (CJPN)

International interest in Japan's contemporary culture (film, anime, manga, etc.) has dramatically increased in recent years. This program offers students interested in these and other subjects an opportunity to pursue in-depth study of contemporary Japan in the context of Asain Studies. The CJPN is shaped by two unique concepts. First, the program extends beyond general aspects of contemporary Japan to explore the specific features of the Chubu Region, economically one of the most vibrant regions of Japan. Several of Japan's most famous companies, including Toyota Motor Corporation, are located in this area, providing opportunities for study not available elsewhere.

Second, many of the subjects offered in this program (including an Internship Program) are of a practical nature and have been designed to facilitate the students' career development. The courses, mostly taught in English, include a wide variety of subjects.
(for students whose main objective is not primarily the mastery of the Japanese language).

The Japanese Language and Japanese Studies Program (JLJSP)

The objective of this program is to provide students with challenging Japanese language and cultural instruction, equipping them with the skills and motivation necessary to the pursuit of their academic goals. The main focus of this program is on the mastery of the Japanese language. The program is also supplemented with Area Studies courses and opportuinities to experience Japanese culture.

Upon application, students will be asked to select either the CJPN or the JLJSP course of study. Students may choose to study one for their first semster, if they stay for the academic year, and then switch to the other the second semester. Some restrictions apply, but it is possible for students to switch after completing one semester. for those wishing to switch form CJPN to JLJSP, there is a more intensive language course that should be taken their first semester (Grammar for Beginners).
