Program Description:
The First-Gen Mocs Abroad Grant aims to give a select group of first-generation UTC students the opportunity to experience a short-term study abroad program. Students selected to participate in this program will receive a scholarship from the Office of Study Abroad to cover the program fees associated with participation in the short-term study abroad program. This is a yearlong experiencing beginning in the Fall semester and wrapping up in the Spring semester. It includes a 1-week study abroad in May.

Program Location:
The 2021-2022 cohort program will run in either Costa Rica or Dominican Republic. Final program details will be announced mid-Fall 2021.

Interested students are expected to attend a minimum of THREE Center for Global Education events in Fall 2021.

Global Spotlight + Language Hour (Lupton Lobby, 1st Floor, 4:30 - 5:30) – attend 1​

  • Egypt – Tuesday, October 26 ​
  • India – Tuesday, November 16 ​
  • Spain – Wednesday, November 17​
International Education Week (held in November, you are encouraged to attend as many events as possible)​
You MUST sign up via MocSync for ITT and Global Spotlight.​ Make sure to bring your UTC ID to all events and swipe in!​

Eligibility Requirements:
  • First-Gen student​
  • Commitment to attending set number of CGE events in Fall 2021 (listed above)​
  • Commitment to participating in course in Spring 2022 (course details will be shared later in the Fall semester)
  • Program Fee:  $100-$250​
  • Completion of post-study abroad requirements​
  • Ambassador for future First Gen Abroad programs
What's Included:
  • Most, but NOT all, program related expenses​
  • Study abroad program to Costa Rica or Dominican Republic (program fee = $100 - $250) includes most meals, accommodation, in-country excursions/activities​
  • Airfare (from Chattanooga to host country)​
  • International health insurance + International SOS membership​
  • Some passport expenses (ex. processing fee through Chattanooga Library)​
NOT included:​
  • Some meals
  • Personal expenses in-country
  • Transportation to/from CHA airport
  • Certain passport expenses (cost of passport)
Application Process:
  • Complete the First Gen Mocs Abroad Program pre-application​
    • Qualtrics survey​ (complete the pre-application survey here)
    • Letter of recommendation​ (submit via the Qualtrics survey)
    • 4-minute video submission​ (submit via the Qualtrics survey, if the file size is too large, please email your video to Laura Livermore: laura-livermore@utc.edu).
  • Attend minimum of 3 CGE events (Fall semester)​
  • Submit completed pre-application (Qualtrics survey, linked above), by 11/1/2021​
  • Register in Spring 2022 course (instructions will be provided to participants)​
  • Complete all Spring 2022 course seminar + trip requirements
Selection made mid-December​, program fee ($100-$250) must be paid in early January 2022 (details will be provided to participants).

First Gen Mocs Abroad Program Pre-Application Video Submission:
Please upload your video submission (to the Qualtrics survey) answering the following prompt:
Tell us "Who are you?" and pick a critical global issue that you feel strongly about and talk about the significance of that issue in today's world. 

Critical Global Issue Categories: Social Justice, Environment/Climate Change/Conservation, Gender Equality, Human Rights, Advocacy, Global Health, Education/Literacy (Rights), Peace/Justice

Video submission should be approximately 4 minutes in duration.

COVID-19 Information:
  • Please note, per the company we will run this program through, all participants will be required to have the COVID shot. If you are unable, or do not wish, to have the COVID shot please reach out to Laura Livermore to discuss alternative abroad options.​
  • DOS Travel Warning Levels: at this time, UTC will allow study abroad to DOS level 3 or 4 locations as long as the advisory level is only due to COVID-19. We will evaluate each location and may cancel programs should medical services be strained in a country due to COVID or should a country’s overall COVID situation change significantly.
