The prestigious Universidad de Alcala de Henares was founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros, Regent of Spain. It was conceived as a cutting edge educational project which fused the best of tradition and innovation in terms of European university models. Its five centuries of history make it one of the oldest universities in Europe.
The Location
The City of Alcala, located about 35km northeast of Madrid, is the birthplace of the world-known novelist Miguel de Cervantes. Alcala settles in the heart of Spain and is very close to its most important airport. There is a public transportation system that is very comfortable and user-friendly, connecting all zones of the city and has access to Madrid every 10 minutes by train or bus.

The School
The Instituto Franklin (UAH) has its roots in 1987 when the University established a center for the study and research of North America. Since then, Instituto Franklin has focused on developing new ways of institutional collaboration between Spain and North America through specific initiatives based on sponsoring research projects and developing academic programs for American students.
The Program
The Spanish Studies Program provides its participants witha versatile interdisciplinary curricula. It offers more than 35 courses every semester in 7 different disciplines: Language, Literature, Humanities, Social Science, International Relations, Business, and English-Speaking courses. All courses include two activities which are mandatory. Students visit some cities around Madrid, government institutions, multinational companies, museums, etc. with the objective of familiarizing themselves with Spanish and European history, culture, traditions, and policy. These activities enhance the learning experience of students and are directly related to the content of courses.
